Schöner, wohlerhaltener Band. *** Printed at he Chiswick Press for the enterprising John Russell Smith. This is Thomas Carlyle's copy, bearing his "Humilitate" bookplate (see North Lee, British Bookplates, 121). Neatly pasted to the blank recto of the frontispiece is the cut signature of John Rutter Chorley, and above it the inscription (in another hand): "Thomas Carlyle as a small Memorial of the great friendship entertained for him by" Chorley, poet and scholar, numbered Carlyle among his small band of intimate friends. Carlyle said of him: "I know no man in these flimsy days... so read.".
